Just like normal children my sister Pam and I would fight. Regular sibling rivalry, nothing too serious. My mom would separate us into our own rooms. Now Pam the pouting one was usually cool with this. She could spend her time in solitary confinement pouting and sulking away. I myself was the verbal child that needs resolution quickly. I had no patience to let any of my life pass me by in punishment. Punishment really doesn’t work for me. I don’t think about what I did wrong, just how am I going to get out.
My sister and I loved gadgets and it wasn’t too often we got these things. One year we saved up for these G.I. Joe phones. They weren’t real phones, more like walkie talkies that looked like phones. As soon as we got them I pulled the G.I. Joe stickers off mine and put new stickers of rainbows and 80’s crap like that on it.
Pam and I had a connection. No more having to write a note when we were banished to our separate rooms. No more needing to look down the hall before tossing my note in her room.
No now I had the help of Hasbro on my side. I remember the day clearly. The fight, being sent to our separate chambers. My sensible idea that we can work this out because we are wasting our short childhood in punishment. I stare at the G.I. Joe phone and push the button that tells Pam that she has a call.
Instead of picking up the phone she tells mom that I am calling her, just asking for more punishment. She had destroyed the whole function of the G.I. Joe phone. I had saved up my money for nothing!
I was back to scented pens and Hello Kitty bubblegum erasers, a keen eye and a steathy throwing arm.
